Haciendas! Food Lovers Tour to Jalisco & Mexico City explores haciendas in Central Mexico: Guadalajara and the Jalisco countryside, and finally Mexico City's urban energy-filled UNESCO Historic Center and super hot contemporary dining scene.
Live the life! Stay in stunning boutique hotels and in a grand hacienda. Our group is small, only ten participants. Enjoy Mexico's traditional, regional restaurants and spirited newcomers helmed by today's most creative and adventurous chefs.
We start in Guadalajara, Jalisco, in NW Central Mexico, and end the 8-day, 7-night tour (one day/night longer than my other Mexico tours) in vibrant Mexico City, named The New York Times #1 place to visit in 2016 because, like New York City, "the city is far safer than it was in the 1990s" and "from restaurants to museums to shopping, it has it all—and there's nowhere in the world quite like it."
You fly into Guadalajara's airport on Monday, February 27, 2017 and are met and transferred to our hotel, a handsomely restored 1930's mansion in the chic, art gallery-filled area of Colonia Lafayette packed with exciting shops, restaurants, cool bars and coffee houses. Dinner is at our first hacienda on the outskirts of town.
We explore downtown Guadalajara's cathedral, the Hospicio Cabañas UNESCO site with its intense Orozco murals, and have a blast at the huge, bustling Libertad market shopping for everything under the Mexican sun.
Visit the second hacienda, famous Hacienda Herradura, home of one of Mexico's oldest and finest tequilas. Following an engaging distillery tour we enjoy a rare walk through the original hacienda before comida (late lunch, main meal of the day) on the spacious grounds.
After a drive through beautiful countryside we check into the third hacienda, our hacienda-hotel to spend the next two nights enjoying the rancho's surrounding landscape, swimming pool, jacuzzi and optional spa facilities and horseback riding. We also explore a nearby, unusual archeological site that's off the beaten path, and visit a fourth hacienda and stay for an unforgettable comida.
Our group flies from Guadalajara to Mexico City CDMX (flight included in tour price) and checks into another boutique hotel in the upscale Condesa area with tree-lined streets and nearby parks.
Each day in CDMX we have comidas and dinners at famous chef-driven restaurants as well as at the top, casual, hip spots. Explore Mexico City's UNESCO Historic Center, with Palacio National's Diego Rivera murals, ancient Templo Mayor, zócalo, cathedral, and Bellas Artes with breathtaking murals by Rivera, Tamayo, Siqueiros and Orozco.
Take in the world-renowned National Museum of Anthropology. Spend a morning at the Frieda Kahlo Casa Azul (Blue House) museum. Shop at El Bazaar Sabado for top quality handcrafted jewelry, textiles and ceramics. Enjoy a guided contemporary art tour by a knowledgeable, lively, local art consultant.
After the Monday, March 6, 2017 morning's farewell breakfast we are transferred to the Mexico City airport for departure.
February-March is Central Mexico's perfect travel time of year as the weather is dry, warm and sunny during the day and cooler at night.
Clothing is casual, lightweight, and comfortable: sandals, sneakers, tees, jeans, and a bathing suit if you wish to swim at our hacienda-hotel.

The single supplement fee is $700.
Haciendas! Food Lovers Tour to Jalisco & Mexico City tour is 8 days, 7 nights: 2 nights at a Guadalajara boutique hotel, 2 nights at a Jalisco hacienda-hotel, and 3 nights in a Mexico City boutique hotel. Tour includes ground transportation, meals when taken with the group, van tours, special guides and site entrance fees. Tour does not include alcohol and wine except at special events when noted, but does include Mexico's excellent beer anytime. Not included are hotel gratuities and personal expenses. The 8-day tour does not include international air: arrival Guadalajara, departure Mexico City.
